“Using Data for Branded Content in a World of Distorted Realities”

With the proliferation of algorithms as the proxy between people & content, content creators & marketers must now design & target the machines to reach an audience. If the “machines” are surfacing content based on audience responses to either biases, or fake news, what does this mean for how we need to analyze the data to understand these audiences so that we can effectively engage them? When humanity’s collective understanding and perception of reality is fragmenting exponentially, how do we normalize our design & targeting models to factor in this variance of what is real & what isn’t?

        Dr. Kate Stone
        Inventor & PhD

          Biography

With a degree in Electronics and a PhD in Physics from Cambridge University; Dr Kate Stone founded the award winning lab Novalia to explore the space where traditional print & conventional electronics converge. Dr Kate wants to infuse our current analogue world with electronics so that everything looks like it always has, except that it can come alive through interaction. Imagine a world where a teenager’s bedroom poster comes to life with the launch of a new album, or an LP that enables you to DJ from the actual record sleeve itself, or a notebook that plays musical notes? This is the world Dr Kate is creating – by adding ‘digital soul’ to everyday flat surfaces that we take for granted, she is changing the world as we know it. Using her patented interactive print, Dr Kate is adding interactivity & capacitive touch to everything from hats and mandalas through to packaging and books – connecting them to the internet.

“Print as the next digital frontier”

By combining conductive ink and conventional electronics we give digital souls to the things around us in the form of touch, connectivity and data capture. Posters that talk or remix music, POS that gives instant feedback to the brand and the customer, brochures that connect to a smart phone, experiential installations in the street, digital experiences in physical forms.

            “An Internet for Everyone”

The Internet was meant to be for everyone. Instead, today it is for corporations and governments. They use it to constantly monitor our lives, to profile us, and to manipulate and exploit our behaviour to satisfy their financial and political goals. What was once seen as a public space has turned into private property. On the Internet, there are no parks, only shopping malls. We’ve lost our public sphere. In its place we find surveillance capitalism, led by Silicon Valley venture capitalists, the Googles and the Facebooks, and the countless startups that want to either be them or be bought by them. This has dire ramifications for our privacy, our freedom of speech, and democracy. Thankfully, another path forward is possible. Small bands of rebels like us are working to create ethical technologies that are free and open, decentralised, and interoperable. We are making the new everyday things so that they’re owned and controlled by individuals, not corporation or governments. Whether or not these alternatives exist (and are allowed to exist) will mean the difference between living under feudalism or democracy. In this talk, Aral will outline the problem with surveillance capitalism and explain how we can avoid digital feudalism to build an Internet for Everyone.

            Rebecca Fiebrink
            Machine Learning Developer

Dr Fiebrink has worked closely with creative technology startups such as Smule, with major tech companies including Microsoft and Google, and with numerous artists, musicians, and research labs around the world. She received a PhD from Princeton University in 2011, then taught at Princeton as an Assistant Professor until 2013, when she moved to Goldsmiths University of London.

              Session at NextM

              “Machine Learning as Design Tool”

Machine learning algorithms are now capable of creating new images, sound, and other media content, which we can reasonably call novel, sophisticated, and even compelling. What do these algorithms mean for the future of human creative practice? Will all of us soon sit at home watching algorithmically-generated music videos after robots take our jobs? In this talk, I will show how machine learning is instead opening doors to new forms of human creative expression. For instance, by modelling data that captures how we move, play, and make art and music, machine learning algorithms can help computers better understand our most expressive human activities. Furthermore, these algorithms can augment human capabilities by allowing people to more easily discover and explore new ideas. By enabling more natural ways for humans to express their ideas to machines, machine learning can even make it easier for more people to engage in creative work and technical innovation. This talk will include live demonstrations of machine learning used to make new musical instruments and interactive art.

                “The rise of omni-channel planning”

Media planning in broadcast media had always been quite different to the 1:1 promise of online. Now that these traditional broadcast media are moving to digital and enabling programmatic connections, what are the implications for successful planning? We’ve been talking about cross-device targeting and multi-screening at home for many years – but how should we approach that in Out of Home? As a digital native joining one of the oldest media companies, Clear Channel International’s Commercial Innovation Director, Cadi Jones, will share her learnings from the last 18 months about the digital transformation of OOH and her vision for a truly omnichannel future.

                    “Advertising for advertising”

In the 90’s electronic music exploded from dark and sweaty basements into a global phenomena with events taking over entire cities attracting millions. It fundamentally broke with musical traditions to date. It blurred the line between sound and noise. It redefined the structure of a song and the politics of the dance floor. And of course it was produced by machines instead of people. On the cusp of the new era of algorithmic advertising is there anything that we can learn from 90s electronic music? Why is good advertising still perceived to be a luxury? Is the divide between award winning and ROI winning creative really insurmountable? How to make, how to measure, how to manage and finally how to master advertising? These are some of the questions that we will examine and try to answer. Come along for the ride don’t forget your earplugs.

“Will AI replace real life buying decisions in the future?”

This provocative talk is about how our businesses are moving into next phase of the internet, the age of machines. We already read the strong signals from Amazon, Google and other platform players about intelligent and learning personal assistants like Alexa, but also can read news about major car manufacturers shipping family cars with intelligent personal assistants in few months in Europe. Its about how to buy and order our daily goods and services in more convenient way, decisions run by algorithms. This has an impact what kind of competencies one wants to build or buy into companies today to compete in this scenario and why it matters today to start learning data-driven marketing, build capabilities for programmatic and build readiness to adapt to the change we all flow in.

Transparency – From Buzz to Business

Transparency was the buzzword of the year in 2017. In 2018, it is time to move transparency from buzz to business. Transparency is not a tactical but a strategic activity. It is not just once in a while that advertisers want to know that they get what they pay for, it is every single time media space is bought. However, the promise of transparency is not easy to deliver across all media and all devices. It places great demands on the technology and data behind the validation of the advertisers’ digital media activities.
