“We are all cyborgs, but not the cyborgs you think. You are a cyborg every time you look at a computer screen or a phone.”

Technology is evolving us, says Amber Case, as we become a screen-staring, button-clicking new version of homo sapiens. We now rely on “external brains” (cell phones and computers) to communicate, remember, even live out secondary lives. But will these machines ultimately connect or conquer us? The difference between an annoying technology and one that is helpful is how it engages our attention. Calm Technology is a framework for designing ubiquitous devices that engage our attention in an appropriate manner. The aim of Calm Technology is to provide principles that follow the human lifestyle and environment in mind, allowing technology to amplify humanness instead of taking it away. The terms calm computing and calm technology were coined in 1995 by PARC Researchers Mark Weiser and John Seely Brown in reaction to the increasing complexities that information technologies were creating. Calm technology describes a state of technological maturity where a user’s primary task is not computing, but being human. The idea behind Calm Technology is to have smarter people, not things. Technology shouldn’t require all of our attention, just some of it, and only when necessary.

          “An Internet for Everyone”

The Internet was meant to be for everyone. Instead, today it is for corporations and governments. They use it to constantly monitor our lives, to profile us, and to manipulate and exploit our behaviour to satisfy their financial and political goals. What was once seen as a public space has turned into private property. On the Internet, there are no parks, only shopping malls. We’ve lost our public sphere. In its place we find surveillance capitalism, led by Silicon Valley venture capitalists, the Googles and the Facebooks, and the countless startups that want to either be them or be bought by them. This has dire ramifications for our privacy, our freedom of speech, and democracy. Thankfully, another path forward is possible. Small bands of rebels like us are working to create ethical technologies that are free and open, decentralised, and interoperable. We are making the new everyday things so that they’re owned and controlled by individuals, not corporation or governments. Whether or not these alternatives exist (and are allowed to exist) will mean the difference between living under feudalism or democracy. In this talk, Aral will outline the problem with surveillance capitalism and explain how we can avoid digital feudalism to build an Internet for Everyone.

What drives him in in his work is to be where our history is written and his pursuit is always to bring our readers and viewers as close as possible and let them meet the people I meet. At NextM Erik will talk about “What’s on the plate: The worst famine in 5 decades – and how we told the story” In 2017 the world witnessed the worst famine since World War II. 20 million people were affected in East Africa and in Yemen. With image, text, video and VR, they showed what is on the children’s plates where there is no food: a grain of rice, a rat, goats blood, water that spreads the cholera. The same day Aftonbladet published the story an exhibition opened at the museum of photography in Stockholm. The exhibition consisted of Magnus Wennman’s pictures and Erik Wiman’s texts and a installation based on the 360-film. In a cylinder-shaped room built of hundreds of monitors, the film was projected on the walls. Unlike watching the movie in our glasses, the experience was able to share with others.

VR/360: What’s on the plate – The worst famine in 5 decades, and how we told the story

2017 the world witnessed the worst famine since World War II. 20 million people were affected in East Africa and in Yemen. Aftonbladet’s Magnus Wennman and Erik Wiman decided to try to break through the silence. They spent three months working and traveling to two of the world’s most dangerous and most inaccessible countries, Somalia and South Sudan. With great experience in reporting from war and natural disasters, they understood that a new narrative technique would be needed to successfully break through. On July 7, What’s on the plate – what the children eat was published at aftonbladet.se. With image, text, video and VR, they showed what is on the children’s plates where there is no food: a grain of rice, a rat, goats blood, water that spreads the cholera. The same day Aftonbladet published the story an exhibition opened at the museum of photography in Stockholm. Thus, news journalism found another effective publishing form. Between July 7 and August 13, the show was seen on the plate by about 1,000 people a day.

FROM NUMBER OF SITES TO LIFESTYLE AND BEHAVIOURAL DATA

What is the future challenge for the OOH industry and how is it to be solved? More reach, integration with other media channels, targeting or what? We will try to explore! The digitalization has brought lots of opportunities and challenges to a traditional industry as OOH. Technique has transformed postering into broadcasting, weekly campaigns into week parts and day parts. The industry is now using terms as trigger data and dynamic content, words that wasn’t in the vocabulary a few years ago. The entering of DOOH has taken the OOH industry to another level. DOOH has become the hybrid between TV and digital advertising. It combines high definition screens with smartness in terms of using trigger data, which means new possibilities for the advertisers. But the industry is still challenged by the possibilities of describing the audience. As we all know, OOH doesn’t possess any cookie data that describes audience behavior in real time, however that doesn’t reduce the need from buyers regarding audience information. Based on this fact, Visual Art is about to roll out a project where audience lifestyle, behavioral patterns and consumption data can be used for targeting. Mosaic/Experian are global brands within the field of lifestyle data and through a cooperation between Visual Art and Insight One who supplies Mosaic in Sweden, the parties can now present a pioneering concept for usage of lifestyle data DOOH campaigns.

There are 3 steps that businesses can take: to be there, be valuable, and be quick. Be there and connect with customers wherever they are along the purchasing journey. Be quick, by reaching customers faster through automation. Be valuable, by knowing customers better through data and insights.

Ad Fixations – the missing piece in how we measure advertising effectiveness today

This talk is about the necessary transformation the media industry is facing to increase digital media efficiency and transparency. Today media buyers are measuring impressions, in screen and clicks, but a crucial element is missing – how many of the people who are exposed to an ad, actually pay attention to it? We all know that if your ad is unseen your message is also unheard and you have not succeeded in making an impact . Eye tracking is a unique tool which objectively measures ad fixations and helps raise the bar within this multi-billion dollar industry. Emelie Löfdahl leads Tobii’s media initiative to equip households across the globe with eye trackers to passively collect attention data and inform brand owners which digital ads people actually fixate on. The research and analysis division of Tobii, Tobii Pro, offers a broad range of eye tracking hardware, software and research consultancy services designed to provide a deeper understanding of human behavior. Our products and services are used by more than 3,000 companies and 2,000 research institutions worldwide, including Toyota, Microsoft, Google, Ipsos, Unilever and Procter & Gamble.

Mobile advertising is now 10 years old. Back in 2008 and the launch of BlackBerry, you couldn’t have dreamt of the mobile ad formats, programmatic distribution methods, messenger apps and social media platforms we take for granted today. We’re in the BlackBerry year of Voice, AI, Immersive Realities and Computer Vision. That explosion which took 10 years in Mobile is going to take 3 to 5 years on these new platforms. Advertising was once one-way storytelling, which we observed. With recent Tech Trends, its become two-way story-sharing and immersive.
